If you’re looking to transfer your domain from Wix to another domain provider, follow these steps to complete the transfer.
Why would you want to move a domain away from WIX?
Once a website is no longer hosted on WIX, the domain name (which is registered with WIX) must also be transferred away from WIX, as they do not allow domains to point to other hosting providers.
Please note that once the transfer is complete, your domain settings, billing, and support will be managed by your new provider.
Step 1: Prepare for the Transfer
- Unlock Your Domain
- Go to your Wix account and log in.
- Navigate to the Domains section.
- Select the domain you want to transfer.
- Make sure your domain is unlocked. Domains are typically locked to prevent unauthorized transfers. If the domain is locked, you’ll need to unlock it to proceed with the transfer.
- Get Your Authorization Code (EPP Code)
- Click the Domain Actions icon (three vertical dots) next to the domain you wish to transfer.
- Select Transfer Away from Wix.
- You’ll be prompted to review the transfer details. Click Transfer Domain.
- Click I Still Want to Transfer.
- Wix will send an Authorization Code (also known as an EPP code) to the email address listed as your domain’s registrant contact.
Step 2: Initiate the Transfer at Your New Provider
- Log In to Your New Domain Host
- Log in to your new provider’s account
- Look for the option to transfer a domain into your account. This option is usually found in the “Domains” or “Domain Management” section.
- Start the Transfer Process
- Enter the domain name you want to transfer (the one you just unlocked from Wix).
- When prompted, enter the EPP Code that was sent to your email.
- Follow the remaining steps as instructed by your new provider to complete the transfer.
Step 3: Confirm the Transfer
- Check the Transfer Status
- Once the transfer is initiated, it can take up to 5-7 days for the process to complete.
- You can track the status of your domain transfer by visiting Whois.com.
- Search for your domain and check the Status field. It should display “pending transfer” once the transfer has been initiated.
- Approve the Transfer (if needed)
- Some domain registrars may require additional approval before the transfer is completed. Check your email for any messages from your new provider asking you to approve the transfer.
Step 4: Finalize the Transfer
- Once the transfer is complete, your domain’s DNS settings, renewal payments, and contact information will be fully managed by your new provider.
- Make sure to update any relevant settings, such as your website’s DNS, to ensure everything works as expected.
Important Notes:
- Domain Expiration: If your domain is close to expiring, we recommend renewing it with Wix before starting the transfer to avoid any disruption in service.
- DNS Settings: Your Wix website will no longer be connected to your domain after the transfer. If you’re using Wix for hosting, you will need to move your website to a new hosting provider as well.
- Once your new domain host enters the EPP code on their end to initiate the transfer, you can use GoDaddy.com/whois to confirm it was initiated. Search for your domain, then check the Status field, which should show “pending transfer” if the transfer has been initiated properly.
